An analysis on The Last Night of the World by Ray Bradbury
TheLast Night of the World fiction by Ray Bradbury gives an incisive, descriptive and articulate illustration of what a person would do ifhe comes the final day of his life. It was published to pose achallenge to the people who live in a situation where they are on theverge of death. Bradbury showcased that these people could do littleto change their fate. The main characters are the husband and wifewhose names are not disclosed. The husband asks his wife what shecould do upon realizing that the night was her last. It makes herperplexed and fervently frightened upon contemplating how her finalmoments on earth would be.
Thehusband`s conscience is strongly convinced that they are on the lastnight, following the scaring dream he had the previous night. So,upon asking her wife what she could do upon realizing that the nightwas their last, the wife becomes confused since such a situation hadnot crossed her mind. The husband remains calm and gets morefrightened that something weird must happen that very night. Hiscolleagues at the office accept that they had a similar dream. Totheir surprise, more people admitted having the same premonitionincluding his wife, a matter that raises more concerns about theirfinal destiny.
Peoplebecame aware of the impending death to the point that they got usedto it. They are all inconceivably perplexed by the life-threateningsituation they are in. The husband and wife acknowledged that theywere relatively average people, without blemish and had no reason toworry about their fate. The husband even laments ‘‘we haven`tbeen too bad, have we?’’ (Bradbury 100). They, however, becamemore concerned about breaking the sad news to their two children.Together, they agreed not to tell them anything about the last night. They are caring and overly protective parents and would not wanttheir children to get carried away by disturbing thoughts about theending world. They want their children to spend their last night onearth in peace without any iota of disturbance.
Thehusband and wife have lived together in peace and faced variouschallenges together. The last night on earn is not different eitheras they are both ready to face it with profound bravery andconfidence. The husband encourages her wife by saying ‘‘we`vebeen for each other, anyway’’ (Bradbury 109). It implies thatwhatever is bound to happen to them, they are more than ready to faceit together without fear or intimidation. They have lived togetherfor long, and therefore, they do not contemplate changing theirlifestyle since it is their last day on earth. They wished each othera goodnight and hoped that all would go well as they both get lost inslumber land.
Thenarration brings out the premise that the end of the world is notnecessarily about guilt or innocence. It is all about how ready weare in terms of confidence and bravery when faced with extreme andunprecedented situations. The compelling story by Bradbury enables usto reflect on the approaches we can take when things get out of hand. The fact that the couple in the story were together until the lastday shows that we should always hold on to each other and besupportive to face various predicaments in life. All of us have acollective responsibility to ensure that we are all safe and living awell-deserved life despite a myriad of challenges that we face.
