Massmedia entails forms of communication whose intention is to reach hugeaudiences. Some of the common mediums of communication that form partof this category include radio, television, as well as print mediasuch as magazines and newspapers. In the recent past, changes intechnology have contributed to the rise of the Internet as a form ofcommunication that reaches a large target audience. Over the years,mass media has had a significant impact on the society. Insociological terms, popular culture entails the collection ofproducts, which can be regarded as cultural. Some of these productsinclude art, dance, literature, film, and fashion among others. Theseproducts are consumed by a majority of the population. It is evidentthat mass media and popular culture are interrelated. This paper isan analysis of the two aspects and how they interact.

Discussion

Massmedia has a significant impact on people as it shapes theirattitudes, opinions, and perception about the world. It is throughthe media that people come to learn of popular culture. This isbecause most of the components that make up pop culture aretransmitted through the print and broadcast media. Mass media isinstrumental in dispersing popular culture and ensuring that itreaches the masses. In the United States, mass media is known to havean impact on the behavior adopted by the public. The media industryhas shaped what people think about products in that relate to thepopular culture. Through the media, it is possible for popular formsof culture to gain the attention of people. Based on how the mediaportrays a product, the public can either choose to like or detest it(Danesi, 2012).

Oneof the significant ways in which the mass media has influenced popculture is through the spread of fashion. Through fashion showsbroadcasted on live television, the public can identify with theirfashion tastes. Media has been influential in recreating past fashiondesigns and enabling viewers to embrace styles that were longforgotten. There are some instances where designs of the past havedominated the scene of fashion courtesy of the mass media. Moreover,the media enables the society to learn about new and foreign designs,which are embraced and become part of the public. For instance,Americans get to learn about the styles of other countries fromfashion magazines and exhibitions that are broadcasted on television(Crothers, 2013).

Themass media has also contributed to violent behavior, which isassociated with popular culture. To a large extent, the social lifeof the young generation has been influenced by what is aired ontelevision. Other components of popular culture such as movies andmusic have affected the behavior of the youth. Child cartoon networksmight air violent scenes, which can trigger violence among theaudience (Crothers, 2013). Aggressive behavior witnessed in teenagersis as a result of the programs they watch on television. When youngpeople watch films, they identify with some actors who are viewed asheroes. This triggers the notion of violent behaviors. Mass mediaalso affects the tastes of audiences. A person’s choice of music orprogram to watch is influenced by what they see on television or hearon the radio (Grossberg et al, 2013).

Itis worth noting that another aspect of popular culture that isinfluenced by the mass media is body image. Opinion about whatconstitutes beauty and attractive looks are shaped by what peopleread and watch in the media. Mass media has focused on the thin body,as the ideal size that women should embrace. This has been enhancedby the selection of female actors with small body sizes. With such aninfluence, the media has contributed to negative self-image,especially for young girls who consider themselves oversize (Beezley&amp Curcio, 2012). The media also affects popular culture throughadvertisement. In a culture where consumerism is dominant like as theUnited States, the mass media is a key player in advertising. Morespecifically, the food and beverage industry has been affected by themedia. The eating habits and lifestyle of the society are determinedby the adverts placed in the media. The purchasing behavior ofconsumers is largely influenced by the images presented by the mediaabout the products they want to purchase (Kidd, 2014).

Conclusion

Thereis a strong linkage between mass media and the popular culture. Thetwo aspects are interrelated and inseparable since they influenceeach other. Components of pop culture such as music, fashion trends,and films are transmitted through the media. Moreover, the media isinfluential in changing the attitudes of people towards consumerproducts such as food and beverages. In the modern world, socialmedia has more influence on popular culture compared to thetraditional forms of media. Through the internet, people can accesstheir favorite products and learn about new trends in the market. Themodern media has changed people tastes and preferences in significantways.
