Social,sexual behavior also functions as a tool of influence at theworkplace and to develop romantic relationships at work. Despite thefact that social, sexual behavior can protect employees from adversejob stressors and develop a relationship at the workplace, thebehavior has many drawbacks. Research indicates that employees whoexperience some sort of sexual behavior at the workplace alwayswithdraw. As a result, the more a worker experiences sexual behaviorwhere they work, the more they tend to withdraw. Employees are likelyto experience depression, changes in psychological well-being, anddepression. There is a need for employees to set boundaries andadhere to office relationship norms.
Socialand Sexual Behavior at Work
Accordingto Merkin and Shah, the social-sexual behavior is a widespreadphenomenon at the workplace or in organizations (2014). First,social, sexual behavior can offer buffering effects to employees byprotecting them from negative work stressors. Social, sexual behavioralso functions as a tool of influence at the workplace and also worksas a means to develop romantic relationships at work. Scholars andorganization leaders have long regarded social, sexual behavior inthe workplace as harassing in nature, deviant, and something thatorganization must do way with to ensure that there is a maximumperformance at the workplace. Most organizations cannot controlsocial, sexual behavior since the behavior is part of humaninteraction. However, there are many drawbacks linked with displayingsexuality, yet the prevalence is still on the rise. Despite the factthat social, sexual behavior can protect employees from negative workstressors and develop a relationship at the workplace, the behaviorhas many drawbacks.
Accordingto Aquino et al., a Sexual behavior is a taboo in the presentgeneration. Many workplaces forbid innuendo sexual jokes, sexualacts, proposing, and overt touching are prohibited in the workplace(2014). Individuals might see some sexual behaviors such as jokesand flirt as innocent, but the present trend does not tolerate sexualpractices due to the need to protect people especially women. Exposure to sexual activities at the workplace is common. Most of thebehaviors such as jokes, sexual materials, and discussions areprevalent compared to direct behaviors such as exposure of privateparts, touching, advances, and sexual attention. Most employeesexperience sexual behaviors at work on a daily basis. Some women donot enjoy direct sexual conduct. However, there are harmful effectsof sexual behavior at the workplace. Numerous research studies showthat, “the more an employee experience sexual behavior where theywork, the more they withdraw irrespective of whether the employeesreported negative or positive attitudes of such conduct” (Nielsenand Einarsen, 2012).
Accordingto Nielsen and Einarsen, employees are likely to experiencedepression and changes in psychological well-being when exposed tovarious sexual behaviors at the workplace (2012). If employees feelless valued in the workplace, most likely they can resort to usingalcohol and drugs. Victims of sexual behaviors can experiencedepression. The victims can experience depressive symptoms even inlater years. Many employees who experience sexual behaviors at workhave feelings of self-doubt. For some employees, self-doubt canchange into self-blame and victims and as a result, have adetrimental effect on mental health including an escalating sense ofdepression. Other employees might experience stress disorders as aconsequence of the symptoms. The stress disorders might includeavoiding other employees, trauma, and events that might remind thevictim of the sexual behavior from other employees. Womenexperiencing sexual behavior from men at the workplace are mostlikely to develop a stress disorder. Therefore, negative sexualbehavior at the workplace can result in stress disorders such astrauma and psychological complications. Women experience increaseddepressive symptoms compared to men. Similarly, women are more likelyto experience long-term depressive symptoms compared to men.
Consequently,employees who undergo unhealthy sexual behavior at workplaceexperience burn out (Nielsen and Einarsen, 2012). Burnout manifestdue to stress and an employee might experience pressure and fromother colleague or workmates at the place of work and as a result ofstress. Stress can interfere with performance and productivity of theemployee and subsequently impact the emotional and physical healthand lead to failure at the workplace that could result in suspensionor termination of the job. Suspension or termination might affect thecompany productivity and reputation.
However,it is the employer’s responsibility to prevent negative socialbehavior at the workplace by proper control and monitoring mechanisms(Fagbohungbe et al., 2012). The most efficient solution to negativesocial behavior is prevention. When employers do not prevent sexualpractices at the workplace, then the problem might escalate andbecome worse. Employers are responsible for providing an environmentthat is favorable for employees. Therefore, employees should take thenecessary steps to deal with social, sexual behavior at theworkplace. Employers could take several measures: First, employeesshould be clear that sexual, social behavior should not occur in theworkplace, provide information and education on sexual, socialbehavior to all staff. Circulating information eliminates silenceamong some employees.
Insum then, sexual behaviors function as a tool of influence at theworkplace and to develop romantic relationships at work. However, thesocial, sexual behavior is detrimental and unwanted by most employeesin the workplace because it has several disadvantages. Social, sexualbehavior decreases satisfaction at the workplace, leads to depressionand anxiety, burnout, and poor psychological health. There is a needfor employees to be informed concerning the norms of office romancebefore acting, maintain strict boundaries between professional andpersonal roles, and be very sensitive to the reactions of managementand colleagues. The consequences could result in failure at theworkplace that could lead to suspension or termination of the job andthus might destroy the reputation of the company or the organization.
