The study of bacteria is called bacteriology. Bacteria aresingle-celled organisms that have different shapes ranging fromspheres, rods, and bacillus. Cancer persists in the body because it is not recognized by bodyimmune system. Cancer cells are not foreign body cells hence they canevade the body immune system. On 8th February (2017),Michael Price published a report on the beneficial use of salmonellabacteria.
The report says, toinfluence the immune system to attack the cancer cells, andscientists have altered the Salmonella bacteria to cause an immuneresponse that fight the cancer tissues. The bacteria were injected ina mice where they shrank the tumor cells, and they could notmetastasize. If the strategy is applied to human beings, it will be abig achievement in bacterial cancer therapy.
Scientists as they were looking for a vaccine in Vibrio vulnificusthat attacks shellfish in South Korean Coast, they noticed a proteinin its flagellum (Price, 2017 Para. 4). The protein was triggering astrong immune response in tissues. Thus, they took Salmonellatyphimurium bacteria which is harmless and altered it toproduce the protein that was called FlaB. The Scientists tested theeffect of the bacteria on cancer. Bacteria can thrive inoxygen-depleted condition as in most tumor cells (Price, 2017 Para.3). Hence, scientists were able to target cancerous tissues. Theyinjected 20 mice with the bacteria. The mice had human colon cancers.A few days later, they found that the mice had eliminated thebacteria from their body tissues, tumor tissues were being eliminatedwith the bacteria. After four months, there were no detectable tumorsin half of the mice, and they survived. Few other mice, were injectedwith the Salmonella typhimurium lacking FlaB proteins.They later died due to cancer. The FlaB protein is expected to stopthe spreading of cancer. It is also supposed that the proteinactivates a molecule TLR5 that makes the immune system moreaggressive (Price, 2017 Para. 7). The research has not been carriedon human trials, but soon, clinical trials will be carried.
In conclusion, even after the use of the most effective technique,tumors always regenerate, threatening the human health. Besides, thebacteria themselves could be toxic and harmful to the human body.Hence, scientists should consider these factors as they carry on withexperiments.
