The purpose of this reportis to apply engineering design process in defining and solving aproblem the issue that will be considered in the paper is about howto save water during showering.


Wastingwater in the shower is one of the activities, which lead to hugebills in the house. The amount of water to be used depends on thenumber of showerhead cuts, duration of the shower, and the rate offlow of the water. It is important to save water during a shower inorder to reduce water and electricity bills. To save water during ashower, one should turn off the shower while lathering the body,install a showerhead with a low-flow, and spend less time during ashower (Treehugger, 2014).


Byinstalling a showerhead with a low-flow, it will cost a lot of money,but save resources through the road due to water conservation. It ispossible for shower water to flow at 2.5 gallons per minute or evenless. While in the shower, less time can be spent by either taking avery quick shower or using a timer, which alerts a person whencertain minutes are over. There are limitations of conserving waterduring a shower such as high initial cost of installing a low-flowshowerhead and high maintenance cost. The main reason as to whypeople conserve water in the bathrooms during showers is to avoidhaving huge expenses on water and electricity.

Descriptionof the Solution

Asmentioned, the preferred solution is to use a showerhead that has alow flow. This solution is the best because it will present anopportunity of water coming out in low pressure. Since water will beflowing at low pressure, it will be possible to use small quantity ofwater. The biggest challenge encountered entails testing the varioustypes of showerheads in order to come up with the showerhead thatminimizes water wastage.


Inthis study, the important information is that an average shower thattakes five minutes consumes fifteen to twenty-five gallons of waterwhile that of ten minutes uses around forty gallons. Possiblesolutions on how to conserve water in the bathroom include getting alow water consumption showerhead, taking less time to take showers,turning off water while lathering and turning it on while rinsing,and putting a bucket in the shower while waiting for water to getwarm.

Outof all the solutions, the most viable solution is to use a showerheadwith a low-flow (Treehugger, 2014). A low-flow showerhead candecrease the consumption of water by forty percent. This is criticalin cutting down the monthly water bills and saving on heating costs.During the development of this solution, there were a number ofchallenges that were faced. These challenges include older models oflow-flow showerheads being less effective, water was at very lowpressure, and production of a weak sprinkle instead of aninvigorating stream. For this solution to be tested, there weredifferent showerheads that were used. The first one that was testedwas the Speakman S-2005, which had a 2.5 gpm flow of water and hadvery high pressure. The second to be tested was the Delta 75152showerhead. It took 1.8 to 2.5 gallons of water per minute and wasthe most preferred.This model was not modified because of its ability to conserve water.To improve the selected solution, the following points wereconsidered: the quality of the showerhead, the rate of flow of water,and the amount of pressure exerted.The solution is good since the pressure of water will be low and thegravity, flow, as well as viscosity will be low. Coming up with themodel was a big challenge.


Theproposed solution for reducing water during showering compares to theexperimentation process utilized by scientists in that both entailsthe installation of new water-saving fixtures and focus on mitigatingthe amount of water used in the process of showering. The scientificprocess proposes the use of water-efficient appliances.The solution can also be applied in conserving water used in cleaningutensils.
