Myfavorite planet is Ceres. It is located between Mars and Jupiter. Theplanet was first mistaken for an asteroid until its surface wasrevealed to be round, a function attributed to gravity possessed byall other planets. Ceres is the smallest planet that is still unknownto many and has several unknown characteristics. However, the mostoutstanding feature of this planet is the possibility of anunderground ocean. NASA’s Dawn Mission embarked on Ceres’sexplorations since 2012 and used telescopes to identify water vaporon the little planet (Betz, 2016). Although they have not confirmedit yet, the team believes in these observatory results (Betz, 2016).

Althoughthe planet is supposed to have an underground water body, the surfaceis still dry. Additionally, the surface has salt deposits on theground which can be postulated as frozen vapor that sublimated andleft behind salt deposits (Betz, 2016). The presence of these saltsdeposits is significant as they form the basis for understanding thedwarf planet’s morphological characteristics. The little planetalso boasts a single mountain that arches more than 6,400 metersabove the surface (Beltz, 2016). Astronomers initially wondered ifthe mountain was created by a solid mass that fell from outer space.A unique attribute of this mountain is that it is a volcano (Beltz,2016). However, little information is available to understand itsvolcanic activities.

NASA’smission of the discovery of Ceres tries to teach us about our solarneighborhoods and how the earth came into being. Earth and Ceres mostlikely share the planetesimals that gave Earth its oceans. Theexplorations on Ceres provide astronomers with the opportunity todetermine if there is life in the underground oceans. Furthermore, ifthis water is accessible on Ceres’s surface, it could offer us theopportunity to understand how life came to be on earth.
