Influenceof Physiology on Perception

Physiologyrefers to the study of body cells and their functions, whereasperception concerns the way in which an organism processes variousstimuli from the surrounding environment. Physiological changes inany organ from the body contribute to misperception of stimuli hencemisunderstanding in conversation. The focus of this paper is todiscuss the influence of physiology on perception.

Differentphysiological changes in the human body affect both internal andexternal environment of an organism (Cazals, Horner, &amp Demany,2013).For instance, during the processes of the digestive system,various organs participate in realizing successful digestion of foodalong the digestive track. Likewise, in the circulatory system, theheart, lung, and blood vessels are actively involved in pumping,oxygenating, and supplying blood to various parts of the body.Therefore, when there are physiological changes in any of the humanbody organs, other organs are likely to pay less attention to stimuliin the external environment. When a person is eating food, most ofhis or her concentrations are on the food.

Consequently,if a colleague initiates a talk during the time when one is consumingfood, chances are high to misperceive the message. In most cases,whoever is eating may give wrong signals or respond inaccuratelyduring the conversation. Any physiological function in the bodyinterferes with perception, particularly the processing of externalstimuli (Cazals, Horner, &amp Demany, 2013). When an individualtakes delicious food, he will always respond positively to the otherparty whom he converses with during meal time. However, if one eatsfood that is not well cooked, he or she appears upset and, therefore,will misperceive someone during a conversation.

Similarly,when one feels threatened by external stimulus the heart beat ratesincrease. Hence, the level at which he records other external stimuliis inaccurate. He may misperceive other people whom he iscommunicating with in the process.

Inconclusion, physiology influences perception. Any physiologicalprocess in the body ultimately affects the way people perceiveothers, and this can cause unpreventable misunderstandings during thecommunication process. To prevent instances of misunderstandingswhile addressing someone, serious engagement needs to be conducted ina suitable environment in which an individual does feel tensed orstressed. Effective communication occurs in a relaxed atmospherewhere a person can respond to various stimuli accurately.
