Thetheory of multiple intelligences was advanced by Howard Gardner in1983. Based on this approach, the traditionally held beliefs aboutintelligence have some limitations. The scholar suggested thatstakeholders in the education sector should consider alternativeapproaches to evaluating the potential of learners. Since itsinception, the theory has had a profound impact on the field ofeducation. Successful educationists always find it essential toemploy the theory while imparting knowledge on students. Teachers whowant to experience continuous growth in their careers should considerincorporating the model in the classroom. In this paper, I willexplore my plan for continuous growth as a teacher who uses multipleintelligences. Being a teacher, I plan to grow as a person who usesmultiple intelligences as opposed to only the transmission of ideas.

Discussion

Thereare various ways of using multiple intelligences in the classroom,which can be helpful for my personal and professional growth. Themethod applied depends on the subject being taught, as well as thelearning stage of the students. Through the use of activities relatedto multiple intelligences, the students will be in a position tolearn with a lot of ease. Based on the theory, some of the keyintelligences include logical-mathematical, linguistic, musical,spatial, interpersonal, existential, naturalist andbodily-kinesthetic.1While applying these intelligences, my teaching experience will beenhanced, thus enabling students to understand the contents of what Iwill teach them. All the intelligences will be applicable whileteaching students at the elementary, middle school and high schoollevels.

Oneof the multiple intelligences that I will use in the classroom islinguistic intelligence. This form of intelligence focuses on thesensitivity of students to elements of language such as rhythms,sounds, as well as words and their meanings. To enhance thisintelligence in students, some of the strategies I will use includeencouraging students to read books as groups, as well as facilitatingthem to read words. This intelligence will also be enhanced byensuring students read stories, practice poetry and become competentin delivering speeches. While evaluating the student’s ability tounderstand what they have learned, writing of stories and encouragingthem to tell stories will be parameters used. While applying thismultiple intelligence, some of the tools I will use include taperecorders, multimedia, word games, and electronic devices such ascomputers.2

Withregard to the multiple intelligences theory, I also plan to use themusical intelligence as a way of enabling me to experienceprofessional and personal growth. Rather than rely on the traditionalmodes of instruction, it is also essential to facilitate the abilityof students to gain musical expression. I will include music in thebackground in order to enable learners to get a better learningexperience. Also, the inclusion of lyrics and rhythmic speaking willform part of my teaching habits. I plan to encourage students to takepart in musical performances, the composition of songs, as well assinging. While applying this intelligence, some of the tools I willuse include radio, music, multimedia, and musical instruments.Through the use of musical intelligence, it will become possible tonurture students who would wish to engage in music after finishingtheir studies. Learners who want to become composers, dancers, andmusicians in the future tend to portray musical intelligence in theclassroom.3

Myplan for continuous growth using multiple intelligences will alsotake into consideration interpersonal intelligence. Throughinterpersonal intelligence, I will manage to grow and at the sametime learn from others. Interpersonal intelligence focuses on theability to understand and make responses to the motivations, moods,and desires of others. To enable students to develop thisintelligence, I will come up with lessons, which facilitate dialogue,seminars and group activities. This way, students it will becomepossible for students to develop interpersonal skills. Some of thetools I plan to use to gain success include audio conferencing,email, as well as telephone. Strategies for enhancing thisintelligence in the classroom include inviting guests to givestories. Moreover, it is necessary to use peer groups for revisionand brainstorming purposes.3

Myplan to use the multiple intelligences will also focus on the problemsolving approach. Teaching problem solving skills to students is anessential component of learning. I will facilitate them to set goalsand at the same time devise ways of achieving these goals. The use ofmultiple intelligences will enable students to feel motivated andparticipate in classroom activities. Moreover, it will make learningfor students enjoyable and improves the relationship among students.Although students are familiar with the material they will learn, Iwill manage to come up with new ways of passing the instruction tothem.

Myplan for personal and professional growth while using multipleintelligences will also focus on lesson design. As a trained teacher,it is essential to take into consideration the impact of lessondesign on the student’s ability to learn. Based on this approach, Iwill seek the opinion of students on the best methods that can beused to teach them. Since some topics are complex, it is vital tounderstand how students would like to learn such subjects. Also, Iwill promote the creation of projects among students. I will guidelearners on how to initiate projects and how best they can managethem. Continuous practical assessment of the progress made bystudents is also crucial. Through assessment, it is possible to knowthe skills gained by learners and examine whether, as a teacher, onehas achieved the set goals. While assessing students, I will learnnew ways of teaching them.4

Toexperience some transformation while at the same time transformingothers, I will facilitate authentic learning and pay keen attentionto the unique needs of my students. This way, I will enable studentsto discover their unique talents, abilities, and interests. I willencourage students to become more involved in learning, and gaincreativity. I will provide students with an opportunity to presenttheir works in conferences. Learners will appear before panels andlarge audiences this will give them confidence and enhance theinvolvement of both the community and parents. While facilitating thepresentations, I will also get a chance to network with otherprofessionals in the education sector, thus growing professionally. Iwish to assist students to discover their strengths and competencies.This will act as a motivation since they will improve theirself-esteem and face challenging tasks with courage.

Itis possible to be bogged down serving the church and forget what isimportant. People who are committed to attending church regularly canforget might not find time to interact with their family and friends.Rather, they are mostly spreading the gospel and can traverse manyregions to serve their respective churches. Several strategies can beuseful r to avoid the outcome of spending too much time in churchactivities. It is essential to balance between the various demands.One of the strategies is to set boundaries and allocate some time forthe church and family. One should manage their time properly toensure all their free time is not spent attending to religiousactivities. Another strategy is keeping a focus on the religiousbeliefs. This implies that one does not necessarily need to be inchurch while conducting prayers.5

Conclusion

TheMultiple intelligences theory suggests that there are various typesof intelligence that can be applied in the classroom setting. Theirapplication can minimize overreliance on the traditional methods ofinstruction. My plan to use multiple intelligences will enable me tolearn a lot as I use the strategies of the theory to instructstudents. Students will enhance my professional growth as I assistthem to exploit their talents. It is true that a person can be boggeddown by church activities to the extent of forgetting about otherimportant events. To overcome such a scenario, one needs to allocatesome time to spend with friends and family.
