Is The Car Seat Challenge Useful?
Thesis: The car seat challenge is very useful since it helps todetermine whether or not preterm and term babies have a risk ofdeveloping complications such as increased heart rate and respiratoryrate and decreased oxygen saturation when they are placed on car sitsin reclining positions.
Topic Sentence # 1: Preterm children face a high risk of developingcomplications such as oxygen desaturation and increased heart andrespiratory rates when kept in reclining positions.
Evidence from a recent pilot study conducted by Arya et al. (2016) indicated that preterm children develop the complications when they are placed on car seats at 40° position.
The complications identified were increased heart rate and respiratory rate and oxygen desaturation (Arya et al., 2016).
Other studies have also found that some of the preterm infants fail the car seat tolerance screening test (McIntosh, 2013).
The most susceptible infants are those with a birth weight of less than 2.5 kg.
Topic Sentence # 2: Some of the full-term infants also fail the carset tolerance screening test.
Arya et al. (2016) found that the full-term infants developed oxygen desaturation and increased heart and respiratory rates when placed on car seats at 40° position.
In the study conducted by Davis (2015), around 4.8 percent of the full-term infants tested were at a high risk of developing the complications.
The mothers of the full-term infants who were susceptible to the complications were likely to test positive for opiates before delivery (Davis, 2015).
Topic Sentence # 3: Apart from placing an infant in a recliningposition, the complications may be caused by vibrations when a car ismoving
Arya et al. (2016) found that car vibrations also contribute to the complications
Other studies have also found car vibrations to be a contributing factor to the complications (Davis, 2015).
Topic Sentence # 4: Although studies focusing on the usefulness ofthe car seat challenge are rare, this does not imply that theavailable evidence should be ignored
The study conducted by Arya et al. (2016) was the first one to explicitly determine the usefulness of the car seat challenge.
However, there are many more studies that have tested whether infants are at the risk of developing the complications mentioned earlier when placed in reclining positions (Davis, 2015).
Overall, the car seat challenge is useful because it enableshealthcare professionals and parents to determine whether preterm andterm infants are at the risk of developing breathing and heart beatcomplications and in the case of a need, take the necessaryprecautions.
