Iwas privileged to attend a community board meeting where severalissues were tackled. The community board meeting was concerned withthe challenges facing the local community, the meeting was held tofind solutions to these problems. One of the issues tackled thatcaught my attention was a proposed project on Quincy Street inBrooklyn NY 11238. A building in Clinton Hill was brought up in theyear 2006 this building is a mid-rise elevator building and is sixstories tall. The building has 48 apartments and is owned by WachoviaAffordable Housing Company which is a real estate firm.
Acompany in Clinton Hill area had the plans of building a high schoolwhich would be seven stories high, the proposed school will be nextto the apartment building. The company was present in the meetingwith the aim of ensuring that the community agrees to the plan byvoting this would initiate the start of the project. However, thetenants of the apartments were not happy because the company had notnotified the residents of their plan to build the school near theapartments. If it were not for one of the tenants seeing the planson the internet, they would not have been aware of the initiative.
However,there are some advantages in having a school near apartments for itwill be beneficial to the local community. For instance if theschool is a prominent one with a good reputation it will beadvantageous because of the good name it will bring to the community.Similarly, children from the neighborhood will be able to score highgrades due to the excellence associated with the school. An apartmentlocated within an area with schools ensures tenants stay in the areafor longer periods. Additionally, having the school around will meanthat students can walk rather than relying on public means such asbuses and trains to access schools which reduce costs associated withtraveling (Ritchie & Thomas, 2013).
However,it is disadvantageous to have the apartments near the Quincy programbecause of the noise that will be made from the school, for instancethe children cheering during sports, school bells and fire drills.Having the school near the apartments will also mean increasedtraffic and limited parking space since the school and the residentswill have to share the parking lot. Additionally, building the schoolnear the apartments will block the tenants back exit which willexpose the tenants to a lot of risks especially during accidents likefire.
TheQuincy program is a good initiative but only if the company hadcommunicated their intentions earlier to the tenants and the localcommunity. Therefore, the lack of communication was a violation ofthe rights of the tenants. Also, if the school is built near theapartments, then the residents will worry about their safety and thesafety of their homes. Moreover, the tenants will not have privacybecause the students will be looking into the homes of the tenants.Some students might become naughty and wreck havoc which might damagethe property near the school for instance through littering andgraffiti (Goddard& Marcum, 2012).
Inconclusion, the company should have notified the tenants where theywould consider both the advantageous and disadvantageous of havingthe school near the apartments. The community board together with thecompany would be able to decide whether it would be a good idea or abad idea to have the Quincy program near the apartment building.
