Literaturesin different fields that touch on economic, social and politicalareas have to use the correct literal styles to realize their desiredgoals. People write for different reasons and, therefore, writers andauthors of various literal works must be well acquainted with thecompetencies required to produce quality work. It would enhance therealization of their goals with ease. For many jobs that entailproduction of written works such as journalists, writers, marketers, and communication jobs in general among others emphasize the literalcompetencies and skills as it contributes to the daily nature andtasks of such jobs. Competent persons, hence, have a higher chanceof progressing successfully in such fields and areas due to theliteral competencies. Rhetoric analysis, thus, has emerged as thepart that determines the skills of different authentic works. Itanalyses how the writers and authors use words to influence theiraudience. However, this paper presents a rhetorical analysis of thework by Rodriguez published in the Daily Bulletin.com website. Itnotes how effective different literal styles and techniques in workare used to inform, persuade the audience and encourage them tosupport the course and message passed through the piece.
Thespeaker of the article is an experienced writer in the differentsector with over five years writing experience. Moreover, she coversthe city of Pomona. The occasion of the writing is for associates andresidents of the area (Pomona). It appeals to them to turn up ifwould empower them to make informed decisions in matters of healthand particularly diabetes and obesity (Rodriguez, 1).
Theauthor encourages the use of pathos, ethos, and logosappeals to present her work. The use of ethos, for instance, is shown in numerous actions. She tries to convince heraudience and show the competencies of the guests that would occasionthe event. For example, she states the qualification of guests toattend the event such representatives from the Western UniversityDiabetes Institute as well as program director of Pomona HealthPromoters Alejandra Martinez featured severally in work.Additionally, she has mentioned one panelist that would be in theprogram, Alfredo Camacho-Gonzalez that works with Day Onenon-governmental organization as project coordinator of communityinitiatives (Rodriguez, 1). The mentioning of such key personnel andtheir competencies encourages approval by the readers to attend thefunction and appreciate the efforts of the organizers. Additionally, the writer has indicated the field that the organization works inthat include education of sensitive public health issues anddevelopment of policies among others. Such evidence and examples inwork increase the chance of the event to get approval from the publicas a worthy event attending (Ferrari, 234). It is because of theefforts and expertise that the panelists and organizers have inrelated issues of interest.
Secondly, logical appeals or logosare extensively used in the text to support the course of theliterature or article. For example, the writer notes that in thecommunity there are many people worried about diabetes. She adds thatthe focus, however, should be on prevention. It is imperative to notethat prevention is better than cure and, therefore, it enables thereaders and audience to be convinced and support the course of theprogram. Such arguments and statements that use logical appeals makethe work effective in relating its goal of convincing many to attendthe function (Wilder, 34). Secondly, she states that people areinterested in getting involved in exercise and getting out in thepark to exercise, but they are worried about their safety as it isnot guaranteed. Safety comes first in most of the things that we do.Hence, such reasoning gives readers of the piece confidence about theevent. The panelists would address the safety concerns among otherguests and organizers. Additionally, statements such as “The morepeople take part in activities that are healthy, the more it leads topolicy that supports and continues to foster healthy behavior.” Itindicates reasoning and logic that readers of the piece can subscribeto because of the sense and reasoning in it. It, hence, encouragesand convinces them to support the event improving the effectivenessof the literal work by Rodriguez. Finally, the program details areput in the piece to the latter that include the time that it begins, the time it ends and the venue. Also, the translation services, thestreets, parking availability and contacts of the person among othersencourage transparency and further consultancy about the program. Itanswers most of the questions that can develop in the reader`s mindand those interested. Placing such information that explains thewhat, when, why, how, where and who shows logic and reason thatappeals to the targeted audience to support the course of the programmaking the literal work effective.
Patheticappeals or pathosis equally used in the piece by Rodriguez. For instance, speakernotes that despite the Pomona area producing lots of vegetables andfruits, some go to waste leading to losses by farmers. They recommendlaunching an exchange program that would take care of such concerns. Moreover, the security concerns of those going for exercise. Thefactors hint sentiments that result in gaining approval by theaudience of such work and, thus, supporting the course (Wilder, 41).Additionally, the work has a picture in the introduction part thatshows a list of common beverages that have high sugar contents thatwould also be a topic under discussion in the event. Many of thedrinks in the picture are among the most common beverages that peopleuse such as coca-cola and sprite among others. It enhances emotionsmaking people reflect on their lives and the importance of the eventencouraging them to participate.
Thewriter has also used detailed literal styles to present the work. Forexample, she has used an image that shows the common beverages thatbring alertness to the subject. Also, the use of keywords such as‘diabetes’ and ‘obesity’ repetitively or severally emphasizesthe importance and concern of the program and goal of the article(Ferrari, 232). The author also uses direct quotations on what keyorganizers and panelists think about the subject. For example, “Weback it up with a policy change.” It enables readers to note thestand and position of the persons and, thus, judge them on theirthinking and ideas about the subject of interest. It also enablesthem to understand the personality and characters of such people. Finally, it enhances an impressive literal work through the directquotations of the key person involved in the work.
Inconclusion, the author has used effective literal techniques thatmake the work effective and competent enough to realize its statedgoals and objectives as noted in the rhetorical analysis presentedabove. The key strategy used by Rodriguez include emotional appealsas well as literal styles that have made the work persuade and at thesame time inform the audience about the program encouraging them toparticipate actively in the event. It also has its drawbacks such aslack of enough use of figurative language, for instance, that wouldenable readers to compare ideas and concepts with real life examples. However, not all literal styles can work or be used in a singleparticular literal work. Hence the work is appreciated as a usefulliteral work because of the great positive styles and appeals used asnoted in the rhetorical analysis.
