SEIStrategies and their Application

Learninga new language can be a daunting task, especially when the instructoris not prepared to deal with its challenges. For example, aninstructor who teaches English to first time learners, like children,has to know that it may be easy for some pupils to understand thelanguage and hard for others. An instructor has to apply strategiesthat will take into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of thelearners. The instructor can employ the following five strategies tocomplement the learning process and yield good results:understandable input, visual representation, augmenting effort andoffering acknowledgement, establishing content goals, andcollaborative learning (Table 1).

Strategy 1 : Understandable Input

Content Area

The instructor should speak the English language slowly so that the learners can listen to the way words are pronounced and know how to use them. The pace of teaching is recognized as understandable input because it is easier for a person to comprehend something when the speaker takes their time to communicate. Additionally, children learn faster by observation and imitation, therefore, an instructor who speaks slowly and clearly will encourage their pupils to communicate in the same way. Constant imitation and practice will help the learners grasp the language faster.

Strategy 2: Visual Representation

Content Area

Visual stimulation is an effective teaching method because it makes it easy for learners to remember certain concepts. It is easier to remember a diagram than to recall words. When teaching children the names of different items in English, the instructor should use pictorial representations. For example, it is easier for a person to understand what a cup is by showing them the exact object. As a result, visual representation is an essential teaching tool for first time English learners.

Strategy 3: Augmenting Effort and Offering Acknowledgement

Content Area

Pronunciation is a basic part of language learning. It is also one of the most difficult areas because learners come from different cultural backgrounds. Cultural backgrounds influence how people pronounce certain words. An instructor has to encourage their students to learn the correct pronunciation of English words. Additionally, the teacher has to be patient with the student. In order to give the leaner confidence, the instructor should acknowledge improvements in the student.

Strategy 4: Establishing Content Goals

Content Area

The instructor should state clearly the lesson objectives for each unit. Objectives help the learners understand both the use and application of the content. For example, if a lesson is about English tenses, the instructor should explain to the learners why that unit is important and how it will help them.

Strategy 5: Collaborative Learning

Content Area

Collaborative learning is whereby students interact with one another and talk about what they learned. Peer association makes it easy for students to understand certain concepts because learners feel free and relaxed around their age mates. An important element of learning a new language is speaking the tongue. The instructor should divide the class into groups and encourage them to speak English with each other. Through interaction, the students will correct each other’s mistakes and improve their understanding of English.
