Comparisonof Social Media Usage across the Age Groups

Theyoung and older generations have similar characteristics when itcomes the use of social media. First, according to the survey,Facebook is the most widely used social network among the young andthe older generation with the common activities being posting orwatching videos, following organizations or groups, joining groupsand supporting causes. Furthermore, the survey indicates that thesocial networking sites are used by both the baby boomers andmillennials on a daily basis. However, several differences were notedfrom the survey in social media usage across the age groups. First, the young generation uses social media networks to maintain linkswith family and friends and to connect and reconnect with people ofsimilar interests. On the other hand, the older generation uses thesocial networking sites mainly for social engagements and communityinterests.

Townerand Lego Munoz (2016)acknowledge that millennials are termed as the &quotdigital natives&quotgeneration, but the survey information reveals that the digitalgeneration gap is narrowing. This survey conquers with that of PewResearch Center that was carried out in the year 2012 which ended upreporting that 65 percent of generation of the baby boomers whoseages range between 45 to 64 years were going online for differentactivities (&quotMillennialsin Adulthood&quot, 2014).In another research, Townerand Lego Munoz (2016)found out that the number of the baby boomers using the social mediasites has been on the rise from the year 2008 with over 51 percent ofthe older population using social networking sites by the year 2015.This survey shows that the young adults aged between 18 to 32 yearsof age are the age group that is most likely to use social media buta small percentage of the older generation uses social media, especially for business marketing purposes. This data conquers withthe research results conducted by Wohnand Bowe (2016)which concluded that 90 percent of the young adults use social mediawhereas social media usage among the older generation had tripledsince the year 2010 when only 11 percent of them used social media. Therefore, this paper will use the survey and expand on the previousstudies by evaluating the impact and use of social media platformacross the age groups.

DataCollection Method

Thesurvey interviewed four individuals myself and three other peoplefrom different age group about the usage and attitude that they havetowards social media. As such, the participants were interviewed toprovide their Provide the demographic information like Age, race, income, and sex. This provided an excellent opportunity to ensurethat the collected information is classified appropriately tofacilitate data analysis. Then the interviewees were asked to specifythe types and features of phones they use and whether they use thephones on a daily basis. Furthermore, the survey required theparticipants to state the type of social media networks they use andto specify how often they use such social media platforms.

ResearchFindings

Theresearch from the survey indicated that Facebook is the widely usedsocial network among the young and the older generation with commonactivities being posting or watching videos, following organizationsor groups, joining groups and supporting causes. The study indicatedthat social networking sites are used on a daily basis by both thebaby boomers and millennials on a daily basis. Moreover, from theresearch, it was clear that both the young and older generationpeople have phones that are internet enabled to use them whenaccessing the internet. The study further noted that, the younggeneration use social media networks to communicate with family andfriends and to reconnect with old friends and connect with people ofsimilar interests and the older generation use the social networkingsites mainly for social engagements and community interests.

Analysisof Findings

Socializationis a lasting process that has profound influence on people`s lives.Zemanet.al (2015)define socialization as a continuous process whereby people learnappropriate behavior, values, norms, social skills and then acquiresa personal identity. This effect is also reflected on thesocialization done on the social networks because it works aspeople’s virtual interaction. The survey revealed that the socialnetwork has influenced young users by making them develop the abilityto empathize virtually which is a good socialization skill despitethe fact that the operant world is virtual. Through this, most youngadults aged between 20 to 32 years use social networking sites tomaintain close relationship with family and friends and to reconnectwith old friends and connect with people of similar interests andcharacteristics. Furthermore, the daily use of social medianetworking sites by both and young and old generation has influencedtheir attitudes and behaviors such that they prefer using socialmedia to engaging in other development activities.

Concurrently, the research shows that the impact of social media was more prevalentamong the young generation because social networking offers them theopportunity to make new friends, acquaintances, reconnect with oldfriends, share pictures, content, and trade ideas. This shows thatsocial networks help individuals to stay abreast of the local andglobal development and take part in activities and campaigns of theirchoice. The difference is attributed to the fact that social mediawas invented at the time the young adults were growing up.

Fromthe research, it is clear that social media networking is essentialto human beings in several ways. According to Townerand Lego Munoz (2016),social media helps people to stay in contact with family members andfriends and reconnect and connect with people of similar interests. As a result, its importance becomes relevant in the world of businessas it provides enough information to the customers concerningbusiness operation.

Conclusion

Insummary, both the young and old generation use social media but theyoung adults are the ones most likely to use these platforms as theyare millennials born during the inception of social media. Therefore, socialization on social media platform has become more important toall human beings because it helps people to stay connected to friendsand family members, reconnect with old friends, and connect with newpeople of similar characteristics or interests.
